Hurricane Sandy Relief

Hurricane Sandy brought much devastation and destruction to the north-east this past week. The estimated cost in repairs is $50 billion, with over 100 people reported dead. The last time the New York Stock Exchange closed for two consecutive days for weather-related reasons was in 1888. This unfortunate tragedy has united sports teams and professionals alike to step up and contribute to different organizations that will bring help and relief from the dreadful storm.

The New York Yankees made an announcement last week that they were donating $500,000 to the Red Cross to support relief efforts in the tri-state area damaged by Hurricane Sandy. Co-Owner, Hal Steinbrenner stated, “As a neighbor and community member, the Yankees embrace our role of stepping forward and assisting the American Red Cross, which comes to the aid of so many people through their tireless efforts.” The NFL also reported that they and their players union will collectively donate $1 million to the Red Cross.

At last Friday's NBA game between the Oklahoma City Thunder and Portland Trail Blazers, Thunder held an auction where fans bid on autographs and a ball signed by the team. A portion of those proceeds were donated to the American Red Cross for disaster relief. Red Cross monetary donations were also made at the Seattle Seahawks game this past weekend.

The Oakland A’s are accepting donations through their personal fund and sending proceeds to the Humane Society of the United States. These donations will help animal rescue teams continue to rescue the animals who have also fell victim of Hurricane Sandy.
