Football fanatics everywhere mourn the loss of Darrell K Royal who passed yesterday
morning at the age of 88. The University of Texas confirmed his death in
Austin. During 23 years as one of the most innovative and acclaimed
coaches, Royal never had a losing season. He went on to win 11 Southwest
Conference titles, 10 Cotton Bowl championships and national championships in
1963 and 1969, going 11-0 each time. Fans across the Country will
remember Royal for his Best-remembered game called "The Big
Shootout", which occurred December of '69. Top-ranked
Texas rallied to defeat second-ranked Arkansas, 15-14, at Fayetteville, Ark.,
while Richard Nixon was in attendance. With an astonishing record such as
this one, it's safe to say that the college football world has lost a true
